On the Road - Tesla: The Cleanliness of Zero Emissions Is Silence Itself

There is no exhaust smell in a Tesla.
This is its most fundamental difference from all gasoline cars. Not the difference in power source, but the difference in olfactory experience. Every working cycle of a gasoline internal combustion engine carries scent: the spiciness of fuel, slight sulfides from combustion, metallic oxides from the exhaust system — even the cleanest gasoline car, what you smell is “something has been burned.”
Tesla has no combustion.
It only has air. Air conditioning brings in air, through the filter, PM2.5 is filtered out, leaving only purified air inside. But “purified air” and “clean scent” are two different things. Clean can be sanitary, impurity-free, but it can also be empty, weightless.
Tesla’s problem is here: it treats the second kind of clean as the first.
Ozone is the first kind of clean. In nature, ozone has an “extremely high place” quality — ozone is produced in the ozone layer, in air after thunderstorms, above the snow line at high altitude. Ozone is not “no scent,” ozone is a weighted cleanliness.
Tesla’s “cleanliness” is more like a surgical suite’s cleanliness, not a high mountain’s cleanliness. Surgical suite cleanliness is sterilized, bacteria-free, lifeless. Ozone’s cleanliness is: the space left after a life process ends — lightning pierces air, transforming oxygen into ozone, then lightning disappears, ozone remains.
This is to say: Tesla’s scent should have a “vanishing weight” — something was here, but is no longer. Like the moment of a lightning strike.
Model S Plaid’s zero to hundred is 2.1 seconds. At this speed, air is not parted, it is compressed. When air is compressed, temperature rises, oxygen and nitrogen molecules briefly become something else — a density feeling “heavier” than normal air. This density lasts only 2.1 seconds, but in those 2.1 seconds, your body remembers that weight.
Then it disappears.
This moment of Tesla is consistent with its ozone quality: it did not not happen, it happened then vanished. That air compression in 2.1 seconds, that “compressed clean” smelled in those 2.1 seconds, is a certificate of presence in absence.
